Safety gear is only as good as its rating for the hazard you face. Here's how to read the labels.
Under ANSI/ISEA Z89.1, Type I hard hats protect against impacts to the top of the head, while Type II also protect against side impacts. Class E is tested to 20,000 volts, Class G to 2,200 volts, and Class C offers no electrical protection. Replace a hard hat after any significant impact.
Look for the Z87+ marking, which means the eyewear meets the high-impact requirements of ANSI/ISEA Z87.1. For grinding and cutting, wear a face shield over safety glasses. Anti-fog lenses help in humid conditions or when moving between hot and cold areas.
The Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) is measured in decibels, and a higher number means more protection. In general industry, OSHA requires a hearing conservation program when exposure averages 85 dBA over eight hours. For extremely loud work, you can wear earplugs and earmuffs together.
In construction, OSHA generally requires fall protection at 6 feet. A complete system includes a harness, a lanyard or self-retracting lifeline, and an anchor point. Inspect all of it before each use. Choose a ladder duty rating that covers the user plus their tools and materials. Ratings run from Type III (200 lb) to Type IAA (375 lb).
Keep first-aid kits stocked to ANSI/ISEA Z308.1. Class A kits cover common workplace injuries, while Class B kits are for larger crews or higher-risk sites. Restock right after use so the kit is ready for the next emergency.
It depends on the hazards, but most sites require hard hats where there's a risk of falling objects, eye protection, hearing protection in high-noise areas, and fall protection at 6 feet or more. A job hazard assessment determines exactly what your crew needs.
Class E hard hats are tested to 20,000 volts, Class G to 2,200 volts, and Class C provides no electrical protection. Electrical workers should wear Class E.
